 A UNIQUE PIECE OF ART

An art gallery is a room or building where visual art is displayed for viewing. “They show you people and places can be portrayed in artistic ways.” The University of South Wales Art Collection is a unique collection, which offers a variety of art forms. It's like a museum and a gallery combined into one, and it features incredible art which is also important for the people who live there.

Evans is principally known for large-scale sculptures constructed from found objects and materials. His work is informed by his fascination of the history and identity of South Wales and the objects he creates using found materials are unique and personal works. Evans' art was deeply influenced by his family mining past in South Wales, which his grandfather and uncles originated from.

The sculpture, named Untitled Large Sculpture, was displayed at the Civic Centre] in Cardiff in the summer of 1972 as a part of project public art. It was made by the shapes of tools and mine tunnels that they used as miners every day. I want to view this work because it demonstrates to what extent art, history, and place can be so artfully (and perhaps forcibly) joined. The sculpture looks like a miner’s pick and also a door to a mine. It reminds us we had to hang by the metaphorical mines, so significant were coal mines to families in south wales for so long.

I would want to look at it in person to see its size, its weight, and how the artist got from actual things to making it. You can turn a sculpture, unlike a painting, because it is in three dimensions. It also makes it more real, I think, and for us to feel the ideas behind it.

Evans’s sculpture isnt only an object: it is a means of commemorating and honoring all that has come before, and the people of a place. That’s something that art can express better than words. If I walked into art space in south wales this is the piece of artwork I would want to see hanging on the wall to greet me.

In short I’d say there’s plenty of creative expression that you can see and tap into around South Wales if you are lucky enough to visit a gallery and in some place like Oriel y Bont probably even moreso. Some are in familiar shapes, some in new forms. The large sculpture that Garth Evans has created that fuses his own memories with that of the land itself, I long to see in the flesh for it would deepen my understanding both of the art and the region.
